The Country Schoolhouse Quilt Shop
Bits & Pieces

Jan 2008

Winter Hours:
Mon-Fri  10-5
Sat: 10-2
or by appointment anytime – not a problem to open earlier or stay later-just call and let me know when.

Happy New Year – Can you believe it is already 2008?  I just got used to putting 2007 on all my checks and correspondence.  They say the older we get, the faster time goes by.  I can vouch for that!

Ragspun Trunk Show- we had a lot of people come in to see the trunk show, but not a lot gave us the key words of “I’m here to see the show” so they could register for the give away….read these newsletters carefully.  The winner of the pattern with Ragspun was Addie Johnstone.  She picked her prize up and maybe even has it done!  We do have more sheep (both sizes) and flowers coming shortly.  They were the most popular during Dec.

Hot Dog Pillowcase Pattern – This pattern has certainly been a hit among the people who didn’t know how to do it—some made as many as a dozen or more of these quick pillowcases for Christmas.  They were great to put packages in also.  I did one for each grandchild and their parents and put their gifts inside it.  They thought that was really cool and they looked cute under the tree.  We will do another demo of this method on January 9th (Wednesday) at 5:00 p.m.  Call to reserve a spot—no cost and it will take about 15 minutes to show you how to do it!  We also have some models at the shop to show you so if that time doesn’t fit, stop in whenever you can and ask to see how to do this.  I have free patterns for it.  We also have some precut kits so you can go right home, sit down and start sewing.

Directions to the Country School House Quilt Shop
(1) Coming N or Hwy 2/53.  See McDonald’s & Culver’s—turn left, 3 blocks to stop sign.  That is E. 5th St.  Look diagonally across street.  I’m in the DeSmet Insurance building—has a big insurance sign in the parking lot.  My sign is on the building next to the door.
(2) From Mn—take Blatnik Bridge.  Follow the Hwy 53 South markers which goes under the bridge.  Going along the lake, past Perkins, Fairlawn Museum.  At Culver’s turn right.  Go 3 blocks to stop sign which is E. 5th St.  Look diagonally across street.  I’m in the De Smet Insurance building – has a big insurance sign in the parking lot.  My sign is on building next to door.
(3) Coming N on Hwy 35 (Tower Ave).  Turn right on N. 28th St (Mall Drive)—go past mall and over railroad tracks.  Turn right at the stop lights on E. 5th St.  Go 3 blocks and I am on the right side at 21st Ave E in the DeSmet Insurance Building.  It has a big sign in the parking lot.  Remember, I am only 3 blocks from Lake Superior.  So if you find the lake, turn 3 blocks away from it and that is E. 5th Street.  I am on the corner of 21st Ave E and E. 5th Street.

Club Notes:
All of our clubs started in Oct. except for Thimbleberries 2008.

Nickel Club meets the 2nd Monday of the month at 5 p.m and will meet for 6 months except for the month of Dec.  Moda Madness meets the 4th Monday at 5:30 p.m. and will meet every other month starting in Jan.  We will meet in Nov. Thangles Buck-A-Block started in Sept. and is in the 3rd month. Remember to pick up on time or you pay!

New Thimbleberries 2008 --The pictures of both lines “Lodge and Lakeside” are on the bulletin board with the 5” samples of the fabrics.  You can do one large quilt in either line or 4 smaller projects in just one line or a combination of both lines.  This makes it all the more fun.  We will start the clubs in January.  You can sign now.  The cost is $25 and includes a 5”pack of either Lake or Lodge.  We will be doing the Thimbleberries Bucks again and I have more fun games planned again for next year, we are also looking into a bus trip to Hutchinson to see Lynette Jensen.  I’ll continue trying new recipes for you to taste and they will be put in a little book form this year and yes, we’ll have another auction.  Sign up individually or sign up as a group—we’ll do as many clubs as we have people signed up for—limit is 14 per club.  Shall we have 3 clubs this year?

***Thimbleberries 2008 Club that meets in afternoon - We do have a club that will meet the 2nd Thursday of the month at 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon.  This club has people signed up already and will start January 10th.

Jelly Roll Club – we only had 2 people interested in this – if there are more at this time who would like to be involved, give me a call.  This would meet on a Sat. morning at 9:00 a.m. and run for 6 months.  I’m looking at a couple books that might be really nice to use for either half the club or the whole thing.  Call or e-mail me right away if interested.  Cost would be $15 to join and then the cost of the project each month.  At least 1 jelly roll which is $30.

New Fabrics – About 45 new bolts of material arrived between Christmas and New Years.  I wasn’t expecting any of it until January.  We have 3 new samples made up for 3 of the lines—new panel for boys with borders that is really cute, penguin and snowmen are another panel with borders and cornerstones and a fun, wild safari quick quilt.              We also have blue and yellow fabrics by Hoffman and some nice flannel kids stuff that shows camping and hiking things.  We are also putting together an easy row quilt of Up North fabrics including strips that show moose and fishing things.  Very outdoorsy!  Valentine Day will soon be here and we have some cute fabrics for table toppers, runners and quilts.  Some have the old-fashioned look and one is even set for making postcards that you can mail.  More and more fabrics will be coming every week during Jan. and Feb.

**Semi-Annual Sale…..January Deep Freeze Sale is Jan. 21-26th.  Mark this on your calendar.  This is when I reduce the inventory to make room for all the new bolts.  The bolts will be out in the hall and are marked down 40% and to make life easy we take all bolts marked $8-$8.50 at $5 per yd.  Stock up on backings.  All first quality quilt fabrics.

I will also have a few older kits that I came upon that will be marked off 30% if they last beyond the Honor Roll Night.  Honor Roll Night will be on Sunday, Jan. 20th—late afternoon.  I will be sending post cards out to those members.  To be in the Honor Roll Club, you must have filled up at least 1 customer reward card since we’ve opened.  In July the criteria will change slightly.

Found-  pair of black fleece gloves in the parking lot after our Nov. Moda Madness Club so check your gloves.  I have them if you lost them!

Classes-  we are planning on offering a few classes for Feb. and March.  If there are any you would like to see, please let us know.  If you are interested in a beginning “Candle Mat” class, please let me know right away so I can schedule it in January—need 3-4 to offer it.  I had some late this fall who were interested—call back if still interested.

Koala Cabinet Order – I have 3 people interested in ordering cabinets for January so if you are interested in ordering a cabinet, table or extra chest, call me right away or come in.  I’d like to put the order in on Jan. 14th or even earlier.

Baby Lock Sewing Machines – Baby Lock has upgraded an entry level machine so that it is computerized.  I have the non-computerized one so I will be discounting this machine so I can bring in the new one.  It lists for $399.  I will sell it for $339 just as it comes without any added accessories.  This is a non-computerized machine but it is brand new and has the full warranty from Baby Lock.  If you want a beginning machine that doesn’t have all the bells and whistles, but has a few decorative stitches, this is a good buy.  I also have all the other “Dream Series” machines on display too.    I will be putting the embellisher on display this month so you can see how wool roving, yarns, threads, etc can be used as embellishment on other natural fabrics.  This gets pretty addicting…..be careful…..
